EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing Therapy
What is EMDR Therapy?
When something painful happens, your mind and body do their best to protect you. Sometimes, though, those protective systems get stuck. Leaving you replaying old memories, reacting strongly to small triggers, or feeling like part of your never really moved on. You may know logically that the even is over yet your body still responds as if it’s happening right now.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of therapy developed to help heal from trauma, anxiety, and overwhelming life experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movement, sounds or gentle taps, to help your brain process stuck memories and sensations.
During EMDR, you don’t have to describe every detail of what happened. Instead, your therapist will guide you through a structured process that helps your brain reconnect with its natural ability to heal. Over time, the memory that once felt raw or activating begins to feel neutral, like something that happened to you, not something that is still happening in you.
What EMDR Can Help With
Although EMDR was first developed for trauma, research has shown it’s highly effective for a range of emotional difficulties. At Golden West Counseling, clients across California, Washington, Oregon, and Arizona use EMDR to address:
- Anxiety & Panic Attacks
- Traumatic Memories or PTSD
- Grief & Complicated Loss
- Childhood Emotional Neglect
- Relationship Stress
- Attachment Wounds
- Burnout & Chronic Over Responsibility
- Performance Anxiety or Perfectionism
- Phobias & Fears
- Depression Linked to Unresolved Experiences
Our brains have a build in system for processing experiences, much like how our bodies heal a physical wound. But when we go through something too intense, such as loss, abuse, an accident, or long term stress, that natural system can get overwhelmed. The memory, emotions, and sensations freeze the nervous system.
EMDR helps “unfreeze” those experiences through dual awareness: one foot in present, one gently revisiting the past. by engaging both sides of the brain through bilateral stimulation, EMDR allows you to process memories safely and effectively.
Over a series of sessions, many people notice that their anxiety, fear, shame, or guilt begin to fade. What once triggered a wave of distress becomes something they can remember without re-experiencing. In its place often comes calm, clarity, and a sense of inner stability.
What to Expect in EMDR Therapy
Your EMDR journey begins with a thorough assessment. We’ll discuss what brought you to therapy, identify your goals, and ensure EMDR is the right fit. Each person’s process look a little different, but sessions typically follow these phases:
- Preparation: You’ll learn grounding, relaxation, and emotional regulation tools so you feel supported throughout the work. If you already have a solid emotional regulation regime, great, that means we can move forward a bit quicker!
- Assessment: We’ll identify specific memories or themes connected to your current challenges. Often the root experience that your brain hasn’t fully processed.
- Desensitization: Through bilateral stimulations, you’ll revisit those memories while staying anchored in the present, allowing your nervous system to reprocess them safety.
- Installation: Positive beliefs (such as “I’m safe now” or “I did my best”) replace the old narratives that kept you stuck.
- Body Scan & Closure: You’ll check in with your body and emotions to ensure resolution and stability before ending in most sessions.
You remain in control at all times. This of it like holding the remote control to your own story. You can pause, rewind, or fast forward through any part of the session. Nothing moves forward without your consent.
How EMDR Differs from Traditional Talk Therapy
While traditional therapy can help you understand what happened, EMDR helps your body believe that you’re safe now. Many people find that insight alone doesn’t change how they feel day-to-day, especially if their nervous system still reacts as if the danger never ended.
EMDR bridges that gap by addressing the emotional and physiological imprint of the experience. If helps you integrate what y our mind knows with what your body feels, creating a deeper sense of peace and resilience.
Healing Beyond Trauma: EMDR for Everyday Life
You don’t need to have a “big traum” to benefit from EMDR. Many clients use it to address chronic stress, self-criticism, or the effects of emotionally draining relationships.
If you’ve ever thought, “I know this shouldn’t bother me, but it still does,” EMDR can help. It allows your brain to complete the unfinished processing cycle, releasing the charge that keeps old experiences alive in the present.
What Healing Feels Like
Healing through EMDR doesn’t mean forgetting what happened. It means remembering without pain. It’s being able to think about the past without your heart racing or your body tensing. It’s responding to the present with clarity instead of reflex.
Many client share the same statement, “It’s like the memory is still there, but it finally lost it’s power.” That shift, when the emotional charge fades and your system feels calm, is where real freedom begins.
